Keep calm, KEEP CALM! Sir, put down that copy of Anti-virus software! NANCY! NO! Do not spray your MacBook with disinfectant, stop! Mac malware is higher, but DON’T PANIC! Ok, granted, it’s an increase of 755%… but it’s only sill adware.
It does look a little scary when you put it that way…
Mac Malware Mostly Benign
By practicing some common sense, you can keep away from the VAST majority of this crap. Don’t download software outside the approved and vetted App Store, keep aware that forums are awful places to download anything, and watch for requests to “install this browser enhancement!”. This will keep you away from what is called Adware, a species of malware that bombards you with ads, pop ups and redirects in your browser.
And for god sakes stay way from MacKeeper!!
Now, indeed, there are some scary things in the list of 460,000 records, but it’s not quite time to install a virus scanner. But, if you suspect you’ve been infected by adware, feel free to go get a copy of Malwarebytes, an excellent removal tool.
We Don’t Have A Problem, THEY Have A Problem!
Though I may change my tune in a few years, the numbers here are but a drop in the bucket compared to the ridiculous amounts of viruses, malware and adware that infect millions of PC’s every day, not to mention all the Android devices oozing the same muck. Keep vigilant, be smart online and you’ll steer clear of this nasty stuff. But, as Macs gain market share, they have increasingly become targets, let’s talk next year!
