Digitizer or LCD? Here’s the difference
This is the question that decides your price, so here it is in plain terms:
- Digitizer (the glass). The top layer you touch. It looks like simple glass – it is not – it is full of sensors that are just waiting to be touched. If the glass is cracked but the picture underneath looks fine and touch mostly works, it’s usually just the digitizer. On most standard iPads it’s a separate part and the cheaper repair.
- LCD (the display). The part that makes the picture. Black patches, lines, bleeding colour or a blank screen mean the LCD is damaged too.
- Laminated displays. On iPad Air, mini (5th gen and up) and every iPad Pro, the glass and display are fused into one assembly. A crack means replacing the whole screen. That costs more, and nobody honest will tell you otherwise.
