Now, disclaimer, if you have a 16GB iPhone, then ya’ll deserve to made fun of – this pro tip won’t even help ya.

iOS Storage Management In iOS 11 Is A Dream

I mean, they may as well hand hold you in what to get rid of, it’s that easy. Most folks have tonnes of crap on their phone they don’t even realize; apps that have’t been used since iOS 7, a video from crazy uncle Ed you didn’t watch and is in fact a 500mb exposition on chem trails, thousands of old text messages. These might be hard to hunt down on your own… but grab your phone and go here:

“Settings –> General –> iPhone Storage”

This image features our new gender/race/species neutral hand pointing icon!

This window may open your eyes a little, showing you exactly what is using up space on your phone. Starting from the top,

  1. Overview – I’m clearly not hurting here, but I use the room for when I shoot long videos:-) This will give you an idea of what kind of media is easting up everything… perhaps you don’t need all 450 albums by Nana Mouskouri?
  2. Auto Delete Old Conversations – Do you really need to reference text messages from 2014? Go on, delete them… unless you are in legal proceedings.. then don’t.
  3. Offload Unused Apps – Leaves the icon, deletes the data. I don’t play a lot of games… and they are space hogs; but once and a while I do like to pull up something; until then, an empty icon will do fine.
  4. Review Large Attachments – This is a gooder, you can delete attachments with granular control… sorry Uncle Ed*, that video is GONE. *This is not a reference to MY Uncle Ed, he’s perfectly sane, super wonderful and has great taste in wines.
  5. The final breakdown shows you exactly what is using how much space…. including individual apps.

This very powerful tool has finally been included in iOS 11, combined with iCloud plans for next to nothing, massive capacity iPhones, no one should have trouble with storage.

As part of regular iPhone maintenance The Stem recommends you keep at least 1GB of free space on your phone, a little head space does it good!
