How To Move Icons In iOS 11

It may sound a little complicated, but once you have the hand of it, it’s SUPER easy!

Step 1: Tap and hold as usual to get your icons dancing.

Step 2: With your finger STILL on one icon, gently move it a bit… you’ll see the “X” disappear.

Step 3: Now, use another finger to simple tap another icon you wish to move, the “X”s disappear and any icon you tap should stack on top of the one you are still holding down.

Step 4: You can move your stack of icons to another screen or reposition as a group, then once you let go, it will redeploy the icons.

Now heres the thing, iOS 11 redeploys your apps IN THE REVERSE ORDER YOU TAPPED. If you tap and hold 1, tap 2, 3, 4, 5… it will deploy left to right, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.. with 1 being the position you dropped it. You can also stack a bunch of apps and toss into a folder by dragging your stack onto another icon as per usual, it will dump all of them into that folder. As with a single icon, you can also drag to the edge to get to the next or previous screen.

Summary

Being able to move large groups of icons makes managing your iPhone screens a lot easier, and once you’ve gotten over the initial learning curve, it’s very intuitive. Still, Android fans still complain about the iPhone grid… why? I can see a SLIVER of benefit from being able to order your icons in a non-locked grid.. but do i really need to spell out “boobs” in icons on my screens? That would be silly… but nostalgic.
